En Route: Part Two

Current as of Thursday Jan. 29, 2009. This post will be a big one in the weeklies. Hope you enjoy ‘em. For the most part, I’m letting the photos do the talking in this post (which is probably how you like it, anyway).

This weeks travels have taken me south. I began this session of travels by hitching a ride in a friends car to the city of Xichang in the Sichuan Province. Due to unexpected delays, particularly a nighttime road closure (due to extremely dangerous roads [see weeklies]), we ended up not making it in the same day, and ended up staying in a small town (unsure of its name). The next few days were spent traveling about in the Xichang area taking in some of the local flavors, and having a couple family dinner’s with my friend’s wife’s family. Oh, right, and due to the Chinese new year, I got to blow up tons of fireworks. I must admit, Chinese new years wasn’t the big party I had expected, but instead, consisted of everything closing down for the entire week before, and a variety of small family activities.

2 days after the New Year’s I was off to Lugu Lake (Lugu Hu). On the way there, I met a group of 7 friends with whom I joined in traveling there (lowers costs of activities when you split it 8 ways) All in all, fairly amazing place. I went for a boat ride, saw 2 sunrises, and dropped my hat in the lake (fear not, it WAS recovered). Lastly, I headed to Lijiang on what was supposed to be a 5 hour bus ride, but turned out to be 8. Anyway, enjoy the weeklies. There are quite a few good ones in there, not including the mandatory “I was here” photo.

thankgod you did't lose your hat!!! was this the indiana jones hat? how tragic that would've been! it would've been like a piece of you had died hahahah.

anyways. i'm celebrating new year tomorrow in chinatown l.a., will most likely take photos & post a blog. it is only a parade & festival, they are not doing the lanterns or fire works until two weeks or so from now.

btw. I love the pic of that littel boy laughing with his two front gold teeth! he looks so happy! it's crazy how you can capture moments like these with strangers.

Are they usually open to you taking their photos? or do a lot of them refuse or shy away?

oh yeah, and I like the shots you took of the temple at night time with the stars in the background! so pretty.

your photos are beautiful & make me feel like i'm there. keep posting them!

To answer your question, lots of the time, I get people to open up really easily. Lots of the time they would not be so open to most people taking photos, but I usually dont just walk up to them and start trying to take photos. I usually try to get them to open up a bit be just being friendly. Sometimes they shy away, but I spend a little time with my subjects, and usually the first couple photos suck, then they are used to the idea of the friendly "laowai" that is hanging around, and they just have fun with me. That shot with the temple stars almost made me lose a shoe... Thanks for responding. Love to know you like the photos.

Wow this months photos were really inspiring, to the point that when you get back imma bug you for some prints. I really really like the snowy trees and the man in the snow. I could see a whole room decorated around two photos like those.

Man, a massive weekly for sure. I really liked the fireworks photos, very balanced. Also, its remarkable the number of stars you could see out there. I must say I'm envious of those who get to see that every night.
I enjoyed all the shots of the buildings too. I can't explain why. Maybe its their shapes, curves, or what; just pleasing to the eye. Nice!
